Event Photography Awards Shortlist

Delighted to announce I’ve been shortlisted for the 2019 Event Photography Awards. The image in question was a capture during a hectic morning shoot in one of the kitchens at a Cambridge College.

Commercial kitchens are never the easiest places to shoot, limited on time, space and equipment. Thankfully several elements seemed to come together and with careful planning the capture was complete.

It’s always a pleasure to be recognised in a national photographic award and especially one that is so hotly contested within the event and commercial photographic world.

Cambridge Design and Construction Awards

Held in the wonderful grounds of St Catherine College in Cambridge the Cambridge Design and Construction Awards took place last week, showcasing truly awe-inspiring design and building projects throughout Cambridgeshire.

Watching the presentations is fascinating. It certainly offers food for thought and I often come away with ideas for building projects, albeit on a significantly different financial footing.

Fresh Looking Group Shots in Cambs

Group shots can often offer up several challenges.. In days gone by, photographers would typically line people up – one row standing, one row sitting and bang – that was the shot… thankfully, those times are largely gone and it’s enjoyable to use the space and furniture and create pleasing visuals that portray groups of people in a slightly more interesting way.

Lovely light, bright corporate space

Recently I had the pleasure of returning to one of my regular clients, shooting some new lifestyle corporate imagery in their wonderfully bright clean environment.

During these shoots, I always to try to keep lighting to around two led studio strobes and the beautiful range of Nikon primes (god I love those lenses, despite the horrendous price!)

Car Share Shoot

This was an enjoyable shoot in the city suburbs, of a community care share project which has recently launched.
It’s always a challenge when you arrive at a location and the rain is beating down and it’s freezing cold… of course, the challenge comes in creating that spring or early autumn look and making sure the volunteer models feel comfortable and look ‘at home’ in the images.

Part of the enjoyment of photography is not knowing what is around the corner – certainly keeps one on their toes!

Fabulous corporate shoot in Cambridgeshire

A couple of months ago I met a group of lovely friendly business people, running a recruitment firm in Cambridgeshire. – I paid a visit to them in 2017, however, with a few new starters they wanted some fresh imagery.

An enjoyable morning shoot followed by.. plenty of laughter, smiles and work.

Fancy a quick snack..? Catering Shoot | Cambridge College

Fancy a quick snack..? maybe queen leafcutter ants,  buffalo worm and cricket falafel hashara or zataar flatbread made with cricket flour? My advice would be to book a dining spot at the fabulous St Johns College in Cambridge.

Talk about pushing boundaries… the chefs and apprentices at the college embrace the chance to work with some unusual and creative ingredients to create some rather memorable dishes!
A few weeks ago I was working on a stock of visuals for their new marketing material.
I love working at the colleges, their history, architecture and ambience is quite something.
It’s always a challenge to get good lighting, especially in kitchen environments where it can be rather hectic – but a challenge is all part of the job.

I particularly love the image of the waiting staff in the grand dining hall – a few strobes helped to present a strong visual.

Light, Bright Corporate Shoot

I remember the days (gosh I sound somewhat old now!) when I was first commissioned – many years ago – to shoot corporate material. I would arrive and be greeted with bland walls, laminate furniture and horrible lighting.

These days companies – certainly those forward-thinking organisations, have created wonderfully light, bright and attractive places of work. Even older properties have been transformed with colour and those nice little touches. It is really good to see organisations investing in their employees, considering their wellbeing and of course enabling photographers to grab some excellent frames.

This recent work is shot in the company’s offices in Norwich and Cambridge and as with the vast majority of my work, was a joy to shoot.

Cambridge Hackathon

Making regular trips to the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus for various photographic shoots, I have the pleasure of working on some really interesting assignments, recently sitting in on some inspirational speakers and learning about new techniques, ideas and generally educating myself and moving out of the proverbial comfort zone.

This set of images is from a recent shoot with a health network, with various speakers and some fabulous brainstorming. All in, a great day in a superbly inviting and very photogenic space.

Cemex Hackathon | Cambridge

What exactly is a Hackathon? that was the question I was asking about 10 days ago when a booking popped in for a two day shoot in Cambridge working with worldwide brand Cemex.

Arriving at the fabulous Moller Centre, it seems I wasn’t the only one asking that question… However, after two long days, lots of coffee, coca cola and tremendous food – the brains of the 150+ people certainly had a good workout!

Come 4pm on Saturday the final ideas were presented, prizes awarded and the commitment from the company to develop the idea.. what a fab way to generate ideas and ‘move forward’ as a brand.
