Portrait of Andrew King. Artist.

Portrait of Andrew King. Artist.

Photographed in 2019 as part of https://theportraits.co.uk/

Spoken in his own words”I’ve always thought that I prefer the title of ‘painter’ rather than ‘artist’. Perhaps this is because any artistry that is involved exists purely in the eye of the beholder! On the same theme, I was once asked many years ago why I painted. I remember being a little ‘thrown’ by this, especially as the person asking the question was examining a painting of mine rather too closely at the time! I can’t remember my exact reply, but I think it was along these lines…’painting is one of the few things that makes any sense to me’. I feel this holds true for me today. Andrew’s approach is influenced mainly by the most recent followers of the East Anglian School of Artists, and in common with this group, the initial work for his paintings is completed on location. He has found inspiration for his interest in light and atmosphere in landscape in France, Italy, East Anglia and even Egypt. His work can be seen in many prominent galleries countrywide and has been purchased for public, private and royal collections, both at home and overseas, including the House of Lords’ art collection”

Carol Baker – Owner of Lockgate Mill – Norfolk

Carol Baker – Owner of Lockgate Mill – Norfolk

Fine Artist and designer.

“I own the Mill as my Father left it in his Will for me. He bought it around the early 80’s and would often come here, mooring up and sit and enjoy the serenity of the place.
In fact, that is what draws me to this area, it is so tranquil, It is quite a special place.
Father would come in on his boat, moor up in the early morning and leave at twilight. He had plans to do something special with the Mill, sadly, that never worked out.
When I acquired the Mill, I worked closely with the Broads Authority and some repairs were made, to sustain the condition, however I am hopeful planned works will begin later this year and then eventually, perhaps it can become the sketching mill I envisage.
As a designer and fine artist, I really appreciate this mill and its standing in this incredibly special place and I am keen to share my experiences with other artists.
Twilight and early morning are particularly atmospheric here. I am creating an artist hub, a sketch mill, somewhere where artists and the students I teach are able to attend and appreciate.
Outside sketching is very important to me, being able to have the essence of a memory of how you felt at a particular time is a special moment.
I Hope to make it a place where artists are able to come freely and just sketch and enjoy the incredible wildlife.
My father lived in Norfolk and we reconnected in the later part of my life, I would come up from London, visiting both my father and the mill. It was a chance to reconnect with nature, but also escape the hectic life.
These days I mainly use oils for my paintings, to be out in the open, sketching is a truly wonderful feeling”

Last Day of Portrait. at Skippings Gallery | Great Yarmouth

Today is the final day of Portrait. being shown at the lovely Skippings Gallery – open until 4pm this afternoon.
Although I’ve only been at the gallery on a couple of days, I have heard it’s been really well received with some good numbers coming through the door – so thank you!
It’s always a pleasure to show ones work to new audiences.
Portrait. is continuing over the next two/three years and I’m on the look out for further people willing to model for the project, which will ultimately end in a published book of the work.

BigC Workshop on the Broads

Saturday played host to the BigC Broads Photographic workshop, which I hosted in aid of the fabulous Norfolk charity on the Edge of the River Bure & Thurne.

Given we’ve enjoyed some fabulous recent weather, I think, quite rightly myself and all the participants envisaged a wonderfully warm, bright day with the cameras….. Sadly, we were met with wind, rain and dreadfully cold temperatures… in fact, it felt more like November.

Still, we Brits are a hardy lot and having only one participant pull out, the rest of us popped the rain coats on and proceeded to shoot some atmospheric images along this picturesque part of the Broads.
Naturally, during the workshop, I’m not shooting my own material, instead, advising, suggesting and running through settings and ideas with all.

After the folks had departed Thurne, I stayed on and shot a few 40 second exposures as the darkness rolled in and moments before it began to rain.
A beautiful hue formed over the mill & river and thankfully in those couple of minutes I managed to capture my one frame of the day.

Summer Shoot on the Norfolk Broads

With the wet and cold weather firmly set in for Winter,  it seems suitable to look back a few months on some of my shoots on the Norfolk Broads, in particular three wonderful days on the Northern & Southern Broads, photographing cyclists, holidaymakers, day trippers, horse riders and locals, all of whom made the summer so much fun for me & my camera gear!

Celebrate Norfolk Day…..

To celebrate Norfolk Day, I thought it was rather suitable for me to share a photograph that I took nearly 14 years ago of Eric Edwards who could quite happily be described as ‘Mr Norfolk’.

This photograph was taken using my beloved Hasselblad 500cm using Fuji Provia. I was an aspiring freelancer at the time, trying to cut my teeth in the world of photography.

I was lucky enough to work with Eric for 18 months, I would regularly visit him at How Hill and spend the day in his company, listening to stories and relishing the opportunity to be with a true Norfolk legend.
I created a really intimate body of work and in many ways these images helped to launch my freelance career.

Thank you Eric and rest in peace (Eric sadly passed away in 2012)
