BigC Workshop on the Broads

Saturday played host to the BigC Broads Photographic workshop, which I hosted in aid of the fabulous Norfolk charity on the Edge of the River Bure & Thurne.

Given we’ve enjoyed some fabulous recent weather, I think, quite rightly myself and all the participants envisaged a wonderfully warm, bright day with the cameras….. Sadly, we were met with wind, rain and dreadfully cold temperatures… in fact, it felt more like November.

Still, we Brits are a hardy lot and having only one participant pull out, the rest of us popped the rain coats on and proceeded to shoot some atmospheric images along this picturesque part of the Broads.
Naturally, during the workshop, I’m not shooting my own material, instead, advising, suggesting and running through settings and ideas with all.

After the folks had departed Thurne, I stayed on and shot a few 40 second exposures as the darkness rolled in and moments before it began to rain.
A beautiful hue formed over the mill & river and thankfully in those couple of minutes I managed to capture my one frame of the day.

In association with the fabulous Norfolk Charity Big C I’m running a photographic workshop on the Broads this Spring.

Join me for a wonderful afternoon on the Norfolk Broads, learning about photographic techniques and getting the most from your camera equipment.
Starting at 2pm, we will spend the afternoon shooting in two locations and then finish with an atmospheric sunset shoot. – Places are strictly limited.

Summer Shoot on the Norfolk Broads

With the wet and cold weather firmly set in for Winter,  it seems suitable to look back a few months on some of my shoots on the Norfolk Broads, in particular three wonderful days on the Northern & Southern Broads, photographing cyclists, holidaymakers, day trippers, horse riders and locals, all of whom made the summer so much fun for me & my camera gear!

Celebrate Norfolk Day…..

To celebrate Norfolk Day, I thought it was rather suitable for me to share a photograph that I took nearly 14 years ago of Eric Edwards who could quite happily be described as ‘Mr Norfolk’.

This photograph was taken using my beloved Hasselblad 500cm using Fuji Provia. I was an aspiring freelancer at the time, trying to cut my teeth in the world of photography.

I was lucky enough to work with Eric for 18 months, I would regularly visit him at How Hill and spend the day in his company, listening to stories and relishing the opportunity to be with a true Norfolk legend.
I created a really intimate body of work and in many ways these images helped to launch my freelance career.

Thank you Eric and rest in peace (Eric sadly passed away in 2012)

Water, Mills & Marshes Performance

On Wednesday 9 May the Marina Theatre in Lowestoft saw a live performance by pupils of Lowestoft Sixth Form College and Pakefield High School when they concluded their project to compose, record and perform an album of songs inspired by the Broads. The finished album now kicks off a new competition which will see the pupil’s work go ‘on tour’

The pupils drew their inspiration for the album from a trip to Halvergate Marshes where they were able to spend time immersed in the Halvergate area of the Broads National Park. The experience was then used as a muse from which to draw inspiration as they took time in the classroom to work individually and in groups to compose, write and produce their own score of music.

Sunrise on the River Bure | Broads National Park

A couple of days before I headed to Uganda for #Giveachildacamera I had a shoot booked around Coltishall in Norfolk – I arrived early and with some time to kill and with it being a decidedly atmospheric morning I popped over to the River Bure and shot a few frames. The sun struggled to make progress through the mist, however with time on my side I sat and gave it thirty minutes and soon the glorious sun made progress and helped to create a rather emotive image.

The Broads Authority & The ‘Broads Plan 2017’

The Broads Authority launched the ‘Broads Plan 2017’ at the end of July in the grounds of the lovely Whittlingham Broad.

Every five years the plan is reviewed by the Broads Authority, our partners and anyone with an interest in the Broads, through a public consultation process, and a new plan is published.

Using wonderfully strong photography and design throughout, the plan is really a great example of how such literature should be produced to engage the local population.
