Ancient Traditions at Hardley Cross on the Norfolk Broads

A recent job in the sun saw me join some local dignitaries on the Broads ranger boats as we went up river to Hardley Cross on the River Yare.
Erected in 1676, the cross marks the ancient boundary between the City of Norwich and Borough of Great Yarmouth – where for one day, the mayor of Yarmouth and Norwich met, reenacting ancient traditions, this year saw the mayors meet, but unlike past history (hundreds of years ago) the issues and taxes of the day were not discussed… unlike hundreds of years ago when the hot issues of the day would be decided on this boundary, often leading to disputes and no doubt the odd battle for tax!
